NZFMR Celebrating Chris Amon

New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing, Celebrating Chris Amon was held these past two weekends with Fridays been a testing/qualifing day.

Here is a rear-end shot of a 1970 Lola T190.
I beleive these F5000 and Can-Am cars of the time were the best series of racing in the world.
At one stage in time they were faster and had more coverage then GP cars.
Two very contrasting weekends made for some absolutely amazing racing and I’m happy I went again.
Can’t wait for next years event.

Stolen & Recovered, Used & Abused & Scene Clash.

It’s Saturday afternoon, all I’ve done today is watch some of Steve McQueens Le Mans (Amazing Le Mans footage) and have a mini Jersey Shore marathon to see what the fuss was about.
Oh and have a looks through some of my photos.
When realy I should have been either at Hampton Downs to watch the second round of the NZFMR or the 4&Rotary nationals.. More so HD because those car shows I stopped going to at 15.

This is my Skyline with a shitty cellphone picture after being recovered after 8 or so months after it had been stolen. I’ve had it since a few months after turning 16. I’ve had cars before it and between owning this.
I was living in Kerikeri, Bay of Islands in ’07 and my dad rings me one afternoon asking some details about my car and, in turn out it was mine. The owner came out shortly after and they exchanged words, dad (Garry) got the cars new details. Days later tracked it down. Had a visit to their house with the spare imobilizer unit and VIN number. Doors unlocked, numbers lined up. The mother of the boy who had bought it from a car dealership, who had previously bought it from Another car dealership decided it was best to get it sorted straight away.
(Insurance had run out a few weeks before, Poor student)
Garry and the mother took it Manukau police shop, told them they have a stolen car out side and they want to get it sorted. Nice police desk lady had no idea what was going on.
2-3 months later court papers were settled so the car unit could removed the car from their property. From there it went into lock up for another 2months to get a specialist from Wellington to retreive the VIN number from the firewall which the Fucks that stole it had grinded and bogged over.
Done, my car.
Shit this is long, my bad.
So, now the boy wanted his money back from the car dealer, and the car dealer wanted his turbo back because he replaced it, bla bla bla. Boy got discounted new car which I think was a WRX and after weeks of argueing I had my car back turbo-less.
Into storage it went, sharing a container with a Leyland P-76.
Fast forward to start/mid ’09, I was living in Hamilton in 2nd year of Sport science degree, bartender at an Irish bar.
Every spare weekend I had off i’d be in Auckland, doing a sort of a rebuild.
Because it had been gone so long, and we didnt think to put the rego on hold.
Complience cert needed.
Months later, Thousands spent, Cert time.
Fail.
What failed? Horn and noisey exhaust.
Fix, fuse and silencer.
Pass.
November ’09. I drive it home.
’09/’10 I drove it all summer around the BoI, come back to start of semester, i’m living in Auckland city, 16th story apartment (I miss city/apartment living so much) continuing study.
Car back into storage.
2nd semester, we move out of apartment, I’m sick of being poor, found a job, study part time, Moved in with friends outside of the city.
Driving again.
Now, the next few months i’m going to be hella poor trying to get this thing to look how I want it.
Game on.

‘Glass Cobra, Such a nice car.
Hampton Downs NZFMR, celebrating Chris Amon, R1.
Last year I never had a camera so had to go without pictures. This year, its on.
Driver had started to get into a slide comming out of the turn before the downhill hairpin,
Off gas,
Tank slap,
Tyre bank.
Bummer.
Was going really well before that though.

Chevette at Kumeu Hot Rod show

Chevette at the Kumeu show two weekends ago.
Was walking past when this car turned up.
I’m so happy this style is filtering its way down to NZ.
Rust, roof racks, low.
Something different in a paddock filled with all different styles of hot rod.
This car made my day.

Super long post!

So i’ll leave you with a picture of an Elephant I took in Thailand last year when my now ex and I went to visit. I have a lot to say on these Tourism Elephants, but not today…

KThxBi!

Born to late, missing the golden years.

McLaren M12 and M1A/B Can-Am

McLaren, What I think is the greatest New Zealand name is around.
Has made world dominating cars throught out its time, starting in 1954/5 through to 2011 and beyond.
F1, Can-Am, Indy Car and a few other formula, McLaren has had its finger in all.
Back ground car is an all alloy bodied M1A/B, first of the Cam-Am cars that ruled America, I’m pretty sure this
particular car is running a Ford V8. The foreground is an M12 that was only raced a few times then sealed in a glass case in a resturant in Japan for a number of years then returning to NZ. These models cars were run up to 9 litre Chevrolet engines making 800+hp, this was in the 1970’s.

Nissan, Ferrari and Chevolet. All in one class

These photos were from the Chris Amon Festival of Motorsport that was held on the weekend, it was pretty crap weather, and I was pretty scared to get my camera to wet, so I took a Lot less pictures then I usually would.
Here, we have a Nissan, Ferrari and Chevrolet, All in one racing class. How much diverse can you get? The Corvette being owned by none other then one half of Hampton Downs owner, Tony Roberts.

Pit wall damage

This is the the aftermath of a F5000 hitting the pit wall entrance at reasonal number of miles, the driver is rather lucky he didnt lose any limbs, considering how close the drivers are towards the front of the car.

High speed, Rooster tail and Reflection.

Reflections and Rooster tails are the best part of shooting in utter crap weather, this is one of the few that I took. The F5000 race had been stopped twice on the Saturday, and they still finished the race, with Sunday being cancelled. I cant want untill next weekend for the next round of more of the racing that I missed out on because I was born to late.

Kumeu Rat rods, One day.

Holy Shit it’s Hot today!
Got up good and early to head to Kumeu… Stuck in traffic for not so long which was good.
Parked in the show because we were in the C4.
Oh the cars! There were So many cars and always new ones turning up so we ended up walking in circles for a while because of the new machines.
One stand that really stood out for me was the Rat Rod area. They blow my mind and have a totally indescribable style that I love.
Would be pretty cool to build one of these kind of cars one day.
One day.
